For me, math is monstrous, but number have meaning. They allow me to measure what’s important and where I want to grow. Here’s how my first quarter of 2023 has added up.
4: Visits to Portland, for each year since we’ve moved.
12: Books read since January
13: Hours I was on the phone in one day with clients and friends.
21: Days out of 23 that I’ve been with friends or family 24/7
42: Days from February 1-April 8th that I’ve either been traveling, hosting guests, or out sick.
49: Days till we must be out of our apartment.
50: Countries I’ve visited as of February 2023.
225: Pilates classes taken. My goal is 250 by mid-May so that I can sign the board before I leave!
300: Pages of a textbook I’ve edited last month.
Just by looking at these numbers you’d see that I value connection, adventure, and knowledge. I’m also a real quality over quantity gal. But when I think about Malcolm Gladwell’s 10,000 hours to reach mastery, I guess there’s an argument for quantity turning into quality…maybe. All the time writing this morning, I’m humming the song Seasons of Love from Rent which tells us that we have 525,600 minutes in a year. Starting Monday, we all have 394,200 remaining. For me, I’ll be counting boxes, airline miles, coaching sessions, and steps taken around our new hometown.
I’m curious, what counts for you?
